Recruitment Weekend - Overall thoughts |
I went into the weekend with an open mind, and armed to defend myself scientifically. Instead, I left pleasantly surprised and faced with a tough decision to make. However, I will have a better idea when I go to my next interview next week.
The campus is relatively new, and pretty small. The campus makes me excited... the city... not so much. I'm sure if I look hard enough, I can find something. This is a big concern for me because although I love science, I need some way to unwind.
The program seems intensive and challenging. It also appeals to my interests. A lot of the research done there is exciting and new. I think I got drawn to the Dean of Admissions as well, a great orator that he is. That is what is exciting me about the program. And the faculty I met with seem happy with their research, excited about it and enthusiastic about teaching.
The mixer was great, and the faculty were enthusiastic and tipsy. My crutches left me unable to run away from them, but that was alright because I got to learn about all the awesome research they do. Chatted with a lot of the graduate school applicants and some of the graduate students.
Went to a local bar, and hung out with some other grad school applicants. The band was loud, and it was a small bar.
I feel at home there. Although it seems a little too campy for my tastes, I can adapt to it.
